My co-worker kept raving about the tasty bacon maple donuts from Great Maple (GM) in University Heights. When my girl friends and I finally had a chance to spend time together, we decided that the European style dinette would be the place to meet.
The restaurant had a full house even at 11:00 AM on a Monday. Fortunately, we made reservations. I thoroughly enjoyed my first time. Yes, we ordered the bacon maple donuts. Our breakfast entrees were fantastic; we devoured the Fried Goat Cheese Squash Blossom and Louisiana Purchase. Both were accompanied with de-crowned English popovers, 2 poached eggs, fingerling potatoes and seasonal fruit. On top of all of that, we also had good cheers with a Bellini, GM Mule (served in the cutest bear jar), and GM Bloody Mary.
If you’re visiting Balboa Park or Zoo for the day, definitely stop in at Great Maple to fulfill the hunger in a modern-retro style dinette. Even if you’re not spending time at those two places, the restaurant is worth the effort. You can also make a day out of with shopping or people watching in Hillcrest or North Park.
